Under a Watchful Eye: What Dance Professionals Need to Know About Child Abuse
Course Description
Dance Professionals are uniquely positioned as mentors, leaders, and community builders to have a huge positive influence in the lives of children. We also know that parts of dance culture can attract unhealthy and, in some cases, predatory individuals looking to insert themselves into positions of power and authority as a way of causing harm. This 2-hour online class will use case scenarios and applicable research to detail how dance schools can be targeted by offenders, what to do if you suspect a student is being abused, how grooming is used against children and adults, and resources to get ahead of the problem. This class is intended for dance professionals, but parents of dancers are also encouraged to attend. Due to the case scenarios, this class is not appropriate for children.
Learning Objectives
1. Recognize how dance schools can be targeted by offenders.
2. Apply the best practices in response to abuse to red flag scenarios presented.
3. Identify how grooming has been used by offenders in the past and plan for a response if observed in the future.
